What is Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy is a cold treatment used to stimulate blood flow and increase the flow of oxygen, nutrients and resources throughout the body and skin. When these nutrients and blood are returned to your limbs and skin, you can feel a variety of positive effects including reduction of swelling, inflammation and pain, and even reduction of cellulite, boosted metabolism and increased muscle recovery.

How Does Cryotherapy Work?

During a cryotherapy session, clients will step into a metal cryotherapy sauna for 3 minutes.

  • In these 3 minutes, the skin will be exposed to air that will gradually get colder until it’s below -200 degrees. This isn’t painful to the body because the air is only making contact with the skin and is dry air.
  • Since the cold air is coming into contact with the outer layers of your skin, thermoreceptors in your skin’s surface are triggered and send signals to the brain.
  • These signals convince the brain that you are “freezing” and that your body needs to send blood, nutrients and resources to the skin.
  • In the process, your blood becomes more oxygenated and is able to remove waste like toxins and lactic acid.
  • Once you exit the sauna, you’ll feel the blood begin to rush back to your extremities and skin, which is often accompanied by a rush of stress-reducing endorphins.

What Does Cryotherapy Feel Like?

Though cryotherapy can be slightly uncomfortable, it is not painful. Those who have had a session describe the experience as a light sensation of pins and needles, which will stop when you exit the cryosauna. Since only the skin is being exposed to cold, it isn’t the same feeling as jumping into a cold lake or being in strong winter wind. Additionally, the air in a cryosauna is dry and not wet.
